Or, “Why Do My Ideas Sound Horrible When I Write Them Down?” The Splendid Ideas Paradox states that we can never write down a story exactly as it is in our heads because it's all an illusion. Here are some tips for overcoming it so we can keep writing!
I really loved this one, Graham! The concept of spark vs. flame is a great analogy to remind us of and I am in full support of your splendid idea paradox! I also agree that the dream and images examples were really beneficial in bringing this idea to light!
Yeah, this was a tough one to dig into, mostly because it is such an abstract idea. I mean, we've all experienced this feeling. But that doesn't mean we can easily overcome it. I'm hoping these few tricks and different ways of looking at it will help.

Thanks for commenting Jodene!
Well described Graham--I run into this issue all the time, and your examples (the dream, especially) and photos really help to make the point.
Thanks Tom!
Yes, I stumbled on that GIF somewhere and thought it was the perfect visual analogy. Glad it worked -- and glad you liked the post!
