I love this! You've made perfect sense of the progression of these three practises. Plus it gives hope that one day we will arrive at the higher level of habit.

Thanks Susan!

Yes, the three levels to writing inspiration enlightenment... lol

Seriously though, it really does give hope when you hear someone like Stephen King say, "Yeah, well, I make some tea, wander to my office, and start writing." It sounds so effortless! None of the, "Should I just do the dishes first?" or "Hmm, do I really have anything to say at the moment?" He just sits down and does it.

Glad you love it Susan! Thanks for the comment!

love these distinctions graham, got me thinking about my own rituals and routines this morning, wondering where i can (and don't need to!) invite more intention into my writing days 🙏🏽

Hi Kristin,

Glad it was helpful! Yes, that's the important part - finding more ways to get motivated to write.

Which raises an interesting way to look at it: the more motivation you need, the more intentional you need to be. That's why ritual at the beginning works so well, because you do approach it with such great intent. By the routine phase, you're still thinking about it, but not as much. When you get to King's habit stage, you hardly think about it at all -- mostly, because you don't need to!

Thanks for sparking that!
