I have mixed feelings about The New Yorker. I used to read it cover to cover (that's when I had a commute!), now I read some of their non-fiction occasionally, or classics (Annie Proulx, Updike ...). I have really gone cold on their fiction. It feels performative to me, anti-stories often.

I haven't read much of their short fiction, except in some cases where I find out afterwards that it originally appeared in The New Yorker. I remember buying a fiction issue many years ago, but none of the stories resonated with me, as I recall.

That's about my feeling with The New Yorker in general. I usually love the writing, but the subject matter doesn't resonate. For some reason though, Nora Ephron's pieces do, even though most are about New York in some way. Maybe I just love her writing that much.

In any case, The New Yorker is on Substack now, which I found out coincidentally while writing this piece... I personally believe that if I figure out *why* it's suddenly on Substack, I'll know a lot more about how the universe works.

Ah, interesting ... I wonder if that will make me cancel my subscription (to the digital mag) ... probably not.
